About SRRNet

A Short History

The Network was formed during 2003 and is an established organisation which currently has thousands of members located all over the world. You can see that we are a truly international organisation with members united by a common interest in aspects of social responsibility. While some people have been involved since the inception of the Network, many have joined us later as part of our development. And of course new members continue to join. We have decided therefore to give a brief history of the establishment and development of the Network.
The starting impetus was the decision to organise a conference on corporate social responsibility. David called it the first international conference on CSR because that is exactly true! This was the first conference on this subject anywhere in the world. As a result of this decision, on three days in September 2003 around 150 delegates from 30 countries from around the world gathered in London at London Metropolitan University. Over the three days the delegates engaged in discussion on a range of issues concerning this topic and presented over 100 papers. Topics addressed ranged from business ethics to social reporting to implications for biodiversity to sustainable construction. We can see therefore that this showed the interdisciplinary nature of the backgrounds and expertise of the participants. We still are very interdisciplinary ins our approach. Conversations about this research continued into the evenings at the dinners organised for delegates. From this conference, a variety of international collaborations developed and this is still a feature of our conferences.
This success demanded repetition and so we started the series of international conferences. So we organised the second conference in Malaysia and the third in India. we have organised subsequent conferences all over the world and still continue t do so. We are currently preparing for future conferences and you can find the latest Call for Papers on this site. We also show full details of all past and future conferences on the site. We also show some pictures from conference. Our conferences are interdisciplinary and we welcome contributions from anyone on any aspect of this topic. Contributors include academics, researchers, business people, NGO managers, government officials and politicians, consultants and scholars. And of course we continue to develop based upon the contributions of our members.
One of the distinguishing features of the conferences is our focus on the subsequent publication of papers presented. We encourage everyone to publish their work but do not require publication in our books or journals. David always says publicly that everyone should publish wherever is best for their work. In addition, we always give advice and run a workshop on getting published. We have found that less experienced participants consider this to be very valuable.
David decided that it was important that all people attending – normally working alone at their university – should be in contact. So he established the Network to encourage collaboration and discussion. Of course conference organisation and publication feature heavily in the work of the Network. This website is a reflection of this work. We encourage every member to become actively involved and to contribute to our growth.
The second important outcome of the first conference was the establishment of Social Responsibility Journal. It was the first academic journal in the field. Initially published by the Network, it developed and Emerald Publishing became involved. David launched this journal to publish work by members and others in this important and growing area. This journal is now a leading journal. Later we launched Technological Sustainability which is also becoming a leading journal. In addition, we publish books through our book series – see the page for their contents.
The Network continues to develop as a dynamic and vibrant organisation. This is  due to the strength of our membership. Possibly, the main reason for the existence of the Network is to enable us all as scholars, with various expertises, to communicate with each other and share information. In achieving this, we join together in research projects, development of courses and course material, and various other activities. We believe the strength and vibrancy of the Network is the same as that of its members. We are inviting you therefore to share in opportunities for collaboration and to contribute to our various publishing outlets.
